Wild animal sell/buy/eat is generally not common is China, recently strict regulation/law is already tighten that. Wet market is a traditional market in a lot of Asian countries. In south east Asia like Singapore, Malaysia... Wet market is also common. personally I like wet market. super market can not replace it. Both are very common sources for normal Singaporean groceries. - UP: 125

it's strange now, a "wet market" seems such a " dirty word"..
It's basically a fresh market. It's pretty much the same all over china. The veggies are much cheaper and fresher than that's in supermarkets. and it divides into two sections, one for veggies, the other for meat and freshly processed fish, cause no one wants to buy a dead fish lying on the table for who knows how long. Although "processing chicken on site" is banned from the market.
No one sells or trades wild animal widely in the open, it is against the law even before the outbreak.
My friend who works at a local cdc department, guess what they do all day, inspecting and testing all food samples from the markets.
It's live and civilization~ - UP: 5

It is actually illegal for selling wild animals in China, only certain wild animals were allowed for sell, such as farmed snakes, rabbits, pigeons, these kind of animal are considering as wild animal even though they are no longer raised in the wild field but in certificate farm. However, as long as it is profitable, some people will risk for it, so there is certainly black market that people selling real wild animals. One of my friend's family was running a restaurant that selling wild animal dishes, and in 2004, because of worrying to be caught and get sued, they closing down the business and moved to Australia. Right now, after the corona virus, gov published some supplementary provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, which totally banned the wild animal trading even though it is no longer wild but farmed, such as snakes. But rabbits and pigeons did not get banned because it has already widely accepted by the people. - UP: 8

People need to start distinguishing the US from 'the West'. Europe, like any place with a rich native cultural heritage, has plenty of similarities with China, especially in the older parts (i.e. southern Italy and Greece would be more like China than Berlin or Scandinavia).
We have the same thing in the public markets. The difference is that fish are generally already dead (but lobsters and shellfish must be alive, obviously; and you could sit directly at the stall to have a few raw oysters).
We also have triperie (for intestines) and no shortage of pig heads on a hook hanging out in the display area, milk out of a tap and fresh cheese made daily (this, the Chinese do not have). If you go into the more traditional areas in France or Switzerland or Italy, you could even find things like cervello fritto (fried brains) and raw horse carpaccio.
I always roll my eyes when Americans think mashed potatoes, roast-beef (une petite blague pour les francophones), and frozen chickens in plastic packages represents 'the West'. What a travesty to the deep and wonderful culinary heritage of Europe, what a grave insult to the legacy of its people!
I hope Europe, China, and all other native cultures of the world will find a balance between scientific progress and safety, and the preservation and celebration of their own cultural heritage. - UP: 0

These wet markets have probably been around for centuries in China and other Asian countries, but never caused any health problems. I remember as a young child 60 years ago in Hong Kong going to a wet market for food shopping. I have lived in the United Kingdom for 50 years and have been to many different types of shops and markets. A "wet market" is basically a combination of farm market, a butcher and a fishmonger all in one, other than "wet". There are so many misleading and anti-Chinese news articles in the UK and elsewhere, arising probably out of jealousy that China is a successful economic country which is not like them. For 5,000 years China has rarely ventured outside its territory. The Chinese people are peaceful people. - UP: 0

Wet markets is part of the culture in China as well as many other countries. Some of them do have hygiene issues and need to be regulated, but getting rid of them altogether is destroying small businesses in favor of big supermarkets. If by replacing wet markets with supermarkets would solve all public health issues then the argument in favor of it would be much stronger. However, we know that's not the case. E-coli and food safety continue to be prominent health issues with processed food. Wet markets provide the locals with inexpensive, healthy organic food. In supermarkets organic food are very expensive items. Therefore, low income family had to buy processed and synthetic food which are usually high in sugar and fat contents. It leads to a overweight society that have chronic illness such as diabetes. So we shouldn't throw out the baby with the bathe water, wet markets need to be regulated not closed down entirely. - UP: 2

Wow, I guess there is no changing your mind... You will believe whatever whatever you wish to believe, you have obviously been brainwashed by mainstream media, fake social media, or anti China YouTubers. The animals you mention are illegal to sell here in China, yes, there is a black market for them. I have no reason whatsoever to lie, seems you can't accept the truth even when it's staring you in the face... Shame you have such a small, closed mind.... I guess you have never been to China to see for yourself? - UP: 1
