Often considered the bogeyman of global climate diplomacy, China is making greater and faster strides than expected away from fossil fuels — becoming the world’s largest investor in solar and wind technology and boasting more jobs in solar energy than in coal-mining. It’s all part of a longterm economic strategy to dominate in critical technologies.
The torrid pace and unprecedented scale of China’s investments in clean energy are driven in part by local concerns about toxic air quality. China remains the world’s leading emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for roughly 30 percent of global carbon dioxide pollution.
But the moves are giving China a growing leadership role on the world stage — precisely at a time when Washington’s voice is becoming less relevant thanks to President Donald Trump’s announced plan to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement, according to interviews with POLITICO’s Global Translations podcast.
Everything Trump touches turns to shi-. Something we had in our hands and Trump has let it slip away and it will take years to even catch up with the technology that other countries have taken the lead in. This was a no brainer until Trump got involved
America will corner the market on coal powered steam. it plays into our large beautiful hands advantage
The title to this article should be 'The U.S. left a hole in world leadership when Trump was elected.
Unlike Trump and the religion of denial, China is smart enough to recognize the issue. In a sector with tremendous growth potential, they are leading and we are lagging. So long as regressives are in charge, we will continue to lag with so many things. Make America great again? Recognize our short-comings and make the necessary adjustments. Working smarter, not harder.

We will not catch up. That is what they call "first-mover" advantage and now China has it. We will import the technology from China--and pay a tariff. These tariffs will be with us long after Trump is gone.
You are totally ignoring the fact that China is using that energy to make products that the rest of the world buys.
who will be laughing when the TVs turn off in China because the wind stops blowing? hmmm checkers not chess people!!!
I do hope that is sarcasm that you posted. Otherwise, you just outed yourself as a throwback.
The leadership of civilization always moves westward....Greece, Europe, Britain, the U.S., and now China.
We are experiencing the decline of American power.
Everyone wants a clean planet.
What made the climate change before humans were industrialized?
What is the Earth's optimal climate, and what is the motive for humans to define it other than selfishness?
Come on now. Coal is clearly our future. America has a strip it bare and burn it all mentality. Clean air and sustainable climate goals are for losers.
I'm all for renewables. I have been to China and have seen the polution first hand. That being said, I read recently that China is set to build 200 new coal burning plants. This artice does not adress that.
China and Russia are filling all the influence gaps (military, trade, economic, infrastructure) that Trump is creating, weakening our standing around the world. Trump's policies are guided by either ignorance or greed.
For a while there was some discussion that the Chinese economy would be falling into what some call a middle income trap. Thanks in part to Trump's climate change denialism China has been presented with an opportunity to fill the gap both in production of alternative energy capital goods such as solar panels and wind generators and in taking international leadership in terms of policy.
The Republican Party is the Worlds only major political party that denies climate science.
The United States is the only country to withdraw from the Paris Accord.
Good. Teh US has given up its role as a serious world player as Trump is turning teh US to a SH%thole nation. Good on China take up teh slack fill in our holes and be teh new responsible world leader. SHow teh world you can do it and leave the US behind and give other nations reason to see that it is a good idea to do teh same. The US is a crumbling empire tht is shooting itslef up and falling in on itself and China or someone just needs to fill imn teh gaps teh US is no longer capable of filling.
Unbelievable that China comes off looking more responsible than the US.
Cool. The US will come around as soon as we get rid of the hemorrhoid in the White House.
China has a 25yr and 50 yr plan to dominate the world. From science, Technology and Trade. On science they have a plan to be the leading scientific country in the world. While America has a day to day plan depending on the happenings of that day. There is a saying " ask an American what time it is he looks at his watch. You ask a chinese what time it is, he looks at the calender.
