China has moved more people from the poverty level to the middle class than the rest of the world since 1979. I had to work there three years. Almost everything I was told in the US about China turned out to be serious BS, - UP: 35
I've been there 12 times, and the lies that the western media say about China are so bad. - UP: 3
I think poverty line should be drawn of weather that person's income can sustain a basic standard of living rather than a fixed amount of money. As the cost of living varies widely across the world. - UP: 92
Agreed. In most countries, rural areas are people who usually farm and produce their own goods, so money isn't needed as much to have a enhance quality of life. I have seen videos of people living in rural villages that have a better life than most people in big cities living paycheck to paycheck. Even though these villagers have less fiat money, they are in fact richer. They own the land they live on, acres upon acres, and can live comfortably even if the world economy crashes. - UP: 14
They can use the Human Development Index which is an international standard, it measures access to universal education, food, clean water，shelter ect - UP: 6
yes, UN's poverty baseline of $2000 per year will be extreme poverty in many developed country. - UP: 2
The amount is superficial. If a family have a home with running water, essential appliances, kid can go to school, 3 meals guarantee and don't need to take out a loan to see a doctor.
This is Chinese minimum poverty standard. - UP: 7

"Cost of Living" is not the same from country to country, city to city.
A USD10 might buy an American two burgers, but RMB10 might feed a family in rural China for a week.
The bottom line is food, health care, education, communication, housing, clothing. - UP: 61
@Timothy Han World bank sets poverty as $2000 a year. Median yearly income in India is $600 USD per person, vs $12k in China and $32k in US. US has higher rate of homelessness than India. If you make less than $15k per year in US, you can't afford rent, so you're homeless. $2000 per year is an absolute joke in US, but more than survivable in India. - UP: 3
@George Dang make sense, it's all relative to the standard of living. But since the UN set it as 2k per year , will just go with it then. - UP: 0
It's not only about the numbers; every country has their own standard regarding to how expensive are the things.
The thing about the poverty alleviation in China, is that one is counted out of the "poverty list" when they have: a job with an income of atleast 4000RMB/year (they actually manage to get as high as 11.000RMB/year); a home; and an access to free education and healthcare. - UP: 12
It turns out Chinese are brilliant capitalists. - UP: 21

China is more capitalist than my own country. - UP: 3
Chinese people are free to emigrate to other countries when they choose to, people can earn as much as they like as long as they are capable to. In many ways China is more of a country of capitalism. - UP: 9

2000 USD per year doesnt sound like a lot, until you realise that 2000 USD a year is about 13000 RMB, or about 1100 RMB per month.
In some of the most inexpesive places of China, like a village, 300-400 RMB per month is fairly standard. The reason why villages cost so little is because the government gave out land to the peasants during the land reforms, so the bulk of the rent/mortgage cost is off the table at the get go. You also produce a lot of your own food. And utilities are subsidised.
In Purchasing Power terms, China's poverty standard is pretty close to what you will have to experience when you have about 2000 USD per year if you lived in rurual US. - UP: 19
You can't live on $2000 a year in rural US. Utilities, which are unsubsidized, will cost twice that alone, anywhere. Rent runs at least $700 a month even in rural Alaska, and 1 bedroom New York city apartment runs $3000+. And there's no jobs in rural US. So you live in the city. That's why we have a homeless crisis. - UP: 4
$1000 max rent for living in Tucson. $3500 max rent for living in Seattle. - UP: 0

"In the quest to build a moderately prosperous society, no one is to be left behind,” vowed China.
No doubt, China is well on its way to eradicate abject poverty by end of 2020.
The initiative taken by China in its efforts to eradicate poverty is well designed, comprehensive, and effective.
With the world most advanced infrastructure in place, every counties and remote villages are now served by rails, roads, and access to water, and internet connections.
With industry upgrade, and emphasis on the supply-side structural reforms, which provides new impetus and symbiosis for the sustainable development of urban and rural urbanization, there’s no doubt that the wealth creation strategy adopted in poverty eradication is gaining traction.
More importantly, these poor folks are empowered with the knowledge, the opportunities, and the needed resources to thrive. They are taught to fish. And as the proverb goes: “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” - UP: 50

Forty years ago in China they have good dinner ones a year , now that good dinner they have everyday. Nobody should be hungry on Thanksgiving day in US , but if we give a homeless person a turkey for Thanksgiving day , how is he going to cook it ? What a contrast between countries and how we try to resolve problem with poverty homelessness and inequality. We need argent coordination world wide to fight with hunger and poverty , this is more important than our ideological differences . - UP: 2

In China the government cares about its people welfare. John Hopkins University ranked US as No.1 and China as low as African Nations in their healthcare but when the COVID pandemic appeared, it completely debunks its ranking and myth. China prove that it has a much better healthcare system that USA.
That is a fact. 🤔❤❤❤ - UP: 42
China meant to take away civil liberties from the western nations and destroy their economies. Notice how China's the only country still open for business? And how Chinese people have been caught partying and going to luxury resorts with no social distancing or masks? Because it's all a hoax! - UP: 2
china has a better health care. Over sixties have free healthcare. seeing a doctor is also free. and we have many local clinics serving the local communities. the kids have a free vaccination program until they are at school etc. etc. - UP: 2

When China brought in partial capitalism, that is when their economy boomed. - UP: 4
It's not actually capitalism since a bigger part of economy is still planned. It's Socialism With Chinese Characteristics. It's basically planned economy with special economic zones that are run by private capitalists so they could get foreign investments but even then it is still under control by CCP. It's basically a way of improving their economy and industrializing using foreign investment while not losing their focus on building a socialist society so while it's not capitalism they still don't have socialism but it seems that in close future they might even get to socialism. - UP: 3
Like all systems its a fusion of state and private mechanisms. Has nothing to do with socialism. Top-down economics is more or less the same whether controlled by a bureaucracy or a private corporation. - UP: 0
@ionezgb China has more billionaires than US. It's capitalism - UP: 0
@john adams I don't know what you are aiming at with this but rich people doesn't equate capitalism. Capitalism is usually characterized by private ownership of means of production, generalized commodity production and markets as means of information transfer. In China most big corporations are publicly owned, a lot of products are produced according to plan with intent of use not exchange for profit and markets are very limited. China is not capitalist and is not socialist, it is in transitionary period.
Also statements like "China has more billionaires than USA" hold no value without proper context. While it is true that china has about 850 billionaires and USA has around 800 which is about 50 billionaires more it's important to notice that China has 4.3 times bigger population. It's much more important to look at growth China has made in a few decades. I have yet to see that kind of growth in any true capitalist country. - UP: 0
Even China today doesn't claim to be socialist but they have a plan to become socialist and they are moving China towards it.
For a country to become socialist you need to have planned economy. Planned economy can only function if you have steady information flow from producers, distribution network, consumers and of course planning institutions. In capitalism this is solved by prices going up and down in prices. We have seen in many examples in history that it's impossible for even biggest teams of statisticians and data analysts to plan whole economy and all goods but computer can and this why you need developed country for socialism. Large network of computers that has access to information about production capabilities, distribution capabilities, consumer needs, etc. That means every factory, store and other companies connected to internet so information could flow much more faster than with any price fluctuation like in markets. But without development, no socialism. - UP: 0

Poverty is not having a roof over your head, no clean cloths. not having the means for basic education and health facilities and not knowing when your next meal would be. If any country could extend these basics living necessities and essentials, then poverty would have been eradicated and it does not matter as to the rich and poor gap, as long as all these basic elements have been resolved. No necessity in comparing or measuring as to the level and degree of poverty with other countries, just like the level and degree of human rights and democracy, as each country has its own yardstick of evaluation. - UP: 15

Fact is that China send in a team of professionals to stay in rural villages for years. Firstly to find out why they are poor, secondly to study the area what resources and advantages the area could provide. There was many instances are those uneducated farmers growing the wrong and unproductive crops in the wrong field with unscientific methods. These pros will provide them advices plus government loans for machineries. Now the harvest and productions is up to 10 folds using the same land. This also encourage farmers to expand. - UP: 4
