my mother, who was born in 1954, once ate tree roots when she was at very young age, when time was not good and farmers struggled with harvests back in 1960s. many people died or lost their young kids cause there was no sufficient food for everyone and they starved. my mother starved as well and for several occasions she ate a certain type of tree roots with her younger brother, while they were both little kids. being able to eat some meat is her most vivid memory for childhood Spring Festival's new year celebration, as my grandparents would try their best to find some meat for their kids.
(meanwhile, on the other side of earth, it was all about rock n roll, love & peace. same planet, different worlds)
nowadays, this old lady of my house enjoys herself constantly traveling from one place to anothe by planes or on fancy high-speed trains, which is also the common lifestyle for many "da ma" (old mothers) in China. she send me pictures and videos of her happy time in Hunan province yesterday with her phone.
such drastic changes and improvements took place within a period of only one generation's lifetime and were witnessed by two generations in China.
as I am putting these words down my infant daughter crys in her cradle and I think to myself that "eating tree roots" may sound like one of those distant stories which starts with "long long time ago" to my daughter, but it was so true to my own mother, and when it's true to my mother then it is real to me.
Professor Yuan Longping, as referred to as "Grandpa Yuan" by many Chinese, is one of the Sages Of Our Time who were responsible for the drastic changes and improvements of this nation.
in ancient time, Sages like "Grandpa Yuan" who made such significant contribution to the society would have statue in every ancestral shrine across China and be mourned and remembered by generations to come.

在古代，像“袁爷爷”这样对社会做出如此重大贡献的圣人，中国各地的祖先祠堂里会为他树立雕像，供世世代代悼念。
